When we decided to make our new CXP R35 intercooler, the first thing we did was to take a long hard look at what was currently available on the market for the R35.
What we found was either smaller nine inch cores that where the same height as the OEM core just thicker, or monster fourteen inch tall cores that required a great deal of cutting and modification to make them fit.
Your choice was to either go small or go huge.
So we started our project by writing down the features that we would like to see in the ideal intercooler for the R35.
- Must fit in the OEM location.
- The front support mount should at the most only require minor modifications.
- Must be able to use all the stock OEM ducting, but also have the option to use larger 3” upper ducting on the outlet.
- Must retain the factory crash beam without having to cut it.
- The height of the core must be larger than nine inches but smaller than fourteen inches.
- Must have billet aluminum tanks. No cast aluminum or even worse aluminum sheet metal tanks.
- Must work with stock turbo FBO R35’s too heavily modified R35’s producing over 1200+ rear wheel horsepower.
Our end result.
- The CXP intercooler is made to bolt into the OEM location.
- There is only minor notching of the front support mount.
- Our core is a potent 22” X 12” X 4.5” bar & plate vertical core utilizing internally offset and staggered cooling fins.
- It flows 85.7 % more air compared to the OEM R35 cores
- All factory ducting can be used, and you have the option to use larger 3" upper ducting on the outlet side if desired.
- The factory crash beam is retained
- The top and bottom tanks are 6061 billet aluminum. They are a proprietary and innovative low profile design, with radiused interior corners.
- Each tank is made from a single block of billet aluminum on a 4-Axis CNC mill.
- Our intercooler will work with a stock turbo’s FBO R35’s to 1200+ rear wheel horsepower R35’s
A lot of our time was spent in designing the unique low profile top and bottom tanks. We knew that the only way we could benefit from the larger 22” X 12” X 4.5” core was to create a whole new innovative top and bottom tank design, so our larger 12"tall core would be able to fit into the OEM location.
These innovative and proprietary tanks leave a small footprint when it comes to height.
The top tank is only 2.6 inches tall while the bottom tank is only 2.4 inches tall.
These low profile tanks also perform more efficiently than larger tanks as well.
There are 3” inch outlets on the top tanks, that not only allow you to use the stock ducting when used in combination with the included silicone hose reducers, but also allow you to upgrade to larger 3” ducting if you desire.
